Chris and Tanya will be getting married on January 7th this year, and getting together to do the engagement shoot was a bit of a challenge since the couple live in North Carolina. We got together December 29th, and prayed that the weather would hold and be pleasant at Huntington Beach Pier. Just as we were getting started, a fog bank rolled in, making for a unique and exciting engagement session.

Today was one of those rare, spectacular days where everything just gels together into a fun day of shooting. This is Chris, and Tanya enjoying a beautiful sunset at Huntington Beach Pier. More to come…

I really don’t have any particular order to this, it was hard enough culling the list down to a nice tidy little article. Each image has a story, so here we go into my favorites. I took a trip into King’s Canyon National Park, my goal was to make it to Cedar Grove to take a few shots. I was told by a park ranger that is where he goes, because it is further than most people like to drive. I was racing the setting sun, I needed the sun just above the mountain ridge, and it was sinking fast. Along the way I found a turn out at the end of this hairpin. It was one of those things I just couldn’t pass up.
This past year I spent a lot of time at Vasquez Rocks, hiking some trails, and climbing around. If there was a cloud in the sky, I was there in a heart beat. There were plenty of times when the sky was barren of any moisture, as in the case below.
Another place that I frequented was Pasadena City Hall. This building with it’s open courtyard is just a beautiful place to be, and photograph.
Yosemite is one of my favorite places on the planet, and every time I leave, there is a sinking feeling in my stomach, and I’m itching to always return. My muse smacked me pretty hard on the two trips I made this year. Here is a sunrise at Glacier Point.
While driving back to town from Glacier Point, the park rangers had a few controlled burns going, which would cast smoke over the forests, making for an eerily magical scene in the morning sunlight breaking through the trees.
When not chasing smoke, and sunrises in Yosemite, one could also find me at the beach, chasing sunsets. Below is one from Huntington Beach, and also one from Laguna Beach.
I have a little hide out in the desert that I go to at least a couple of times a month. It’s where I can just relax, listen to podcasts, reconnect with my muse, and occasionally, take a picture.
The weather is a driving force in my life, especially if there are clouds in the sky, and when there are clouds in the sky, if at all possible, I’m on the hunt for a location to shoot right around sunset. Sometimes it pays off to just look in the rear view mirror, as in this case. I just pulled over, strode to the middle of the rode with my camera, and WOW, I surprise myself.
This last image is one that has a little bit of emotion significance to me. Even before framing the shot, the symbolism mirrored what I was feeling at that moment. I even had the title before I triggered the shutter.
This is a very special post for me, for it is my 100th. Last Saturday I was privileged to do an engagement shoot with Brian and Ashley. I first met them at Ian and Meghan’s wedding last year, but only briefly. Saturday I got to know both of them better while they took me to the spot he proposed to her. We then headed to Huntington Beach Pier to catch a little bit of a sunset.
They met in 1997 when they were in high school, and Ashley and Wendy, Brian’s sister were best friends. Apparently they had a rocky start because Ashley and Wendy would bother Brian constantly. Brian and Ashley lost touch for several years until 2008, when they reconnected and became best friends. The following year was spent in a game of cat and mouse, Brian chasing her all the while, until they finally started dating in May of 2009.
Brian is a tall, and quiet man, and is no stranger to the economy of well placed words. Ashley is a lively free spirited soul, and has a unique energy that lights up whoever is in her presence. Together they are perfectly matched.
I would like to close with a quote from Annie Leibovitz, which expresses my experience this past Saturday. “A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.”

Yesterday I had the opportunity to do an engagement shoot with Brian and Ashley in Huntington Beach, CA. A romantic sunset isn’t romantic if there isn’t a couple to enjoy it, don’t you think? Here is a sneak peak:
